Previously, Jimi has done freelance work for season three of Raw Travel TV, and currently does illustrations children’s books which are then translated into Lakota for Thunder Valley, CDC. He works in India inks, watercolors, alcohol based art markers and prismacolor colored pencil.
His inspirations are Carl Barks, Tomie dePaola, SD Nelson, Naoko Takeuchi, Vincent Van Gogh, Don Rosa, Vincent Van Gogh, Egon Schiele, Salvador Dali, Donald Montileaux, and Yoshitaka Amano.
Artist’s Statement:
Jimi La Pointe is an Oglala Lakota freelance illustrator and comic artist. He has illustrated four children’s books used for Lakota language classes with Thunder Valley CDC, illustrated and done apparel graphic design for Raw Travel TV, and was featured in The Red Cloud Heritage Center annual art show and the Governor’s Art Show. He has work appearing soon at the Sioux Indian Museum in Rapid City, SD. Growing up in Pine Ridge, SD has given him a unique understanding of his culture with the ability to translate that into storytelling. He wishes to tell more contemporary stories that feature Native Americans in modern settings, in an effort to show that Lakota people aren’t relegated to history.
La Pointe's illustrations are simple with a stylized nature meant to capture a broader idea. He explores art through the media of coffee stained watercolor paper, watercolor, India ink and ink pens, and colored pencil, executed in a style befitting a contemporary graphic novel. La Pointe's approach is well-suited to children’s book illustrations, novel covers, vinyl stickers, note cards, or small prints, a professional merchandising move he looks forward to making alongside a transition to digital media. This would ensure the traditional cultural aspect of storytelling be brought into new mediums
